The Porch House

The Porch house in Stow-on-the-wold

We booked an overnight staycation at The Porch house, for early November - we needed a break after a hell-a-busy summer both our jobs had been so full on since we opened in July (thanks, covid). The room was just under £150 for bed and breakfast for the evening, a reasonable amount to spend IMO for a night away, on your doorstep. I booked the room with Breakspear reservations, as its part of their company - strangely so is the Frogmill which I have previously written about ( https://ameliatheo-jones.wixsite.com/blog/post/the-frogmill ).

We arrived just after 1pm on Sunday, as we had booked Sunday lunch with them. We were sat in a dinning room to the left of the main front door, it was dimly lit and lacked atmosphere. We were disappointed in their gin selection and in their choice of tonic water (it was something I'd never heard of, and was so sweet I could hardly taste the gin!) We ordered two Sunday roasts after some sharing bread.

The roast came out quickly after the bread but was an epic disappointment...

The meat was bland and severely under seasoned, the potato tasted like had been prepped days in advance and was going starchy, the veg was over cooked and the gravy had nothing to it. I've eaten some dismal roasts in my time (boarding school!) but for £20 a plate we weren't going to eat this one. We explained to the waiter it wasn't to our liking and rather than subtly removing the plates he essentially called us out, loudly, in front of the entire (quiet) restaurant!! I was mortified, Mal could see my cringing, and asked for a quiet word with him in the bar area. The meals were removed from the bill, we drank up and left, taking ourselves a long walk up and down the town to cool off.

We had a lovely room - which almost made up for the 'incident' at lunch.

We decided to eat out (of course) and delightfully we discovered The Old Stocks Inn - which we thoroughly enjoyed! ( https://ameliatheo-jones.wixsite.com/blog/post/the-old-stocks-inn )

Breakfast was the nicely presented, with good quality coffee, and although heavy on the onion for breakfast, it ended the stay on a high note.

We would give this stay ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars, and would definitely try it again if they reached out but seeing as I still haven't had a reply from my feedback email it does seem unlikely and there are more exciting places around to try out... !
